This question goes to you O Abdulkarēm. Do we say, the 'smallest' Sūrah in the Qur'ān, or the 'shortest'?

Student: Shortest (Aqsar).

Sheikh. Yes, shortest (Aqsar). It is more appropriate to say this than to say 'smallest' Sūrah.

So for example, you would say, the shortest Sūrah in the Qur'ān (Sūratul Ikhlās) equates to a third of the Qur'ān.

And the same applies to Hadeeth (prophetic narrations). Don't say, the smallest Hadeeth. You should rather say, one of the shortest Hadeeth is...and the Prophet ﷺ was given the ability to express comprehensive knowledge using very few words.

With that said, we believe that Allāh's speech yatafādhal (some speech is more virtuous and more excellent than others).
So, Sūratul Fātihah is the greatest Sūrah, Āyatul Kursī is the greatest Āyah, Sūratul Ikhlās equates to one third of the Qur'ān, etc.

And this preferential difference that exists in the Qur'ān indicates to the preferential difference in Allāh's names and attributes. And although some of the people of knowledge said there is no preferential difference in this regard, the evidences however, indicate otherwise, and Sheikhul Islam has given an extensive clarification of this fact in many of his works.

So, you should say Aqsar (shortest) - not Asghar (smallest)
